Meet Fred Presley
-Tell me a bit about how your career began?
My music career has been starting and stopping for several years. I started playing and writing songs in my early teens, and playing in bands in college and beyond. This album is my first venture into a solo career.
-Who inspires you as an artist?
I grew up in a musical family and was always surrounded by great music of various genres. Today, my inspirations are mainly the storytelling singer-songwriters. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jason Isbell, Sarah Jarosz, Aimee Mann, Ryan Adams… It’s a very long list.
-Tell me about working on your newest project?
I knew I wanted to get into the studio to record my song Sympathize. It’s a song about the ongoing assault on our natural environment that I wrote several years ago while in college. It never quite worked for the bands I was in, but I always knew that I would record it one day. Given the current state of global politics, it seems more relevant now than ever. I reached out to my good friend Eric Lichter at Dirt Floor Studios, here in CT, and told him what I wanted to do with the song, and while I was there, record a whole album.
-Who are some people you want to collaborate with?
Man, I am wide open there. So many that I would love to work with. Jason Isbell, Sarah Jarosz, Aimee Mann for starters…
-Tell me a surprising, fun fact about yourself?
From the day that I graduated high school, I’ve been in public service. First, I was in the Army as a Czech and Slovak linguist. After college, I worked for state, federal and local governments, working in environmental science, planning, and administration. I have been a city/county manager for the past 14 years or so. Music was always there but now it’s time to bring it forward!
-What are you watching on TV these days?
Currently watching Shrinking on Apple TV and always catching the Daily Show and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert… Gotta try to keep things light.
-Anything else you want to tell America? – What’s next for you?
Making this album has truly rekindled my passion for music and songwriting. I have a pretty deep catalogue of original songs that I want to record. This is my first solo album; it won’t be my last.
