Jennifer Yen Goes from Power Rangers Star to Powerful Skincare Guru

Tell me a bit about yourself and your career.
I’m a mom and a former TV villainess. I use to fight Power Rangers and now I save complexions with Purlisse, inspired by Asian beauty rituals and YENSA beauty, the Superfood Cosmetic.
I had to spend 15 hours a day under heavy makeup and bright lights, leading me to develop rosacea, sensitive and adult acne. After many dermatologists, I found that nothing worked to cure my skin. I was desperate, and discovered my Grandmother’s Asian beauty rituals, which inspired me to create Purlisse beauty.
After giving birth, my mother was feeding me superfoods to heal my body post-partum. This healed my skin and made me glow from the inside out. I was motivated to create my second brand, YENSA, the Superfood Cosmetic.

What made you switch from acting into the world of beauty and skincare?
My path to becoming a CEO is an unconventional one – I’m a former TV villainess. I used to fight Power Rangers on TV, and had to spend 15 hours a day in heavy makeup, which wrecked my skin. I tried everything to fix it but nothing worked, and that is when I re-discovered my grandmother’s Asian beauty rituals and inspired me to create Purlisse beauty. While I was pregnant with my daughter in 2014, I was fatigued and once again faced with problematic skin. My mom was nourishing me with Black Superfoods, which made me feel healthy and energetic again, leaving my skin radiant. It was during my pregnancy that sparked my idea for YENSA beauty, the superfood cosmetic.

What is the biggest challenge of working in the skincare business?
Business itself is always a challenge, but skincare and beauty business is competitive. The most challenging thing is staying innovative and be the first to do something new in the industry. We also aim to do more with less to be as efficient as possible, while still delivering high-quality products for our customers.

What would you say was the most rewarding part of your job?
I’m lucky because my job is my passion. I really appreciate when I get emails from women telling me how much our products have helped their skin and boost their confidence. Along with employing a great group of women, it’s the most rewarding!

What is one skincare product you think every woman needs?
I believe every woman needs an amazing multi-tasking product that can give her skincare benefits, great coverage and protect skin from sun (super important). YENSA BC

Foundation with SPF40, and the Purlisse BB cream with SPF30 are our best-sellers, and perfect products for every woman on-the-go.

Describe your daily skincare routine.
I’m a busy mom and business owner, so I keep my morning routine short and sweet, but still effortlessly beautiful. In the morning, I cleanse with purlisse BLUE LOTUS cleansing milk, apply BLUE LOTUS 4-in-1 Eye Adore Serum, BLUE LOTUS Essential Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30, then get flawless coverage with the YENSA BC Foundation with SPF40.

You’re also a mom. How do you balance everything?
I do my best. I don’t feel guilty if I don’t make it to every event or do every drop off and pick up from school. I’m thankful I have my mom and dad who help me with my daughter. My favorite way to balance is to include my daughter in my work such as beauty events and travels.

What are you watching on TV these days?
I’m still on Season 7 of Game of Thrones! I don’t have much time for TV, as I try to spend quality time with my daughter when I can.
