Cissy Houston Passes Away at 91

Sad news for the music world today. Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney Houston and a star in her own right, has died. She was 91 years old.

According to the Associated Press, she died Monday morning in her New Jersey home while under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease. Her  daughter-in-law Pat Houston confirmed the news in a statement.

“Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We loss the matriarch of our family,” Pat Houston said.

“Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts,” she concluded.

Cissy was an acclaimed gospel singer who won Grammys in 1997 and 1998 for Face to Face and He Leadeth Me, respectively. She worked with her daughter Whitney, Jimi Hendrix, Barbra Streisand, Beyoncé and many others throughout her decades long career.

In addition, she was the author of three books: HeLeadeth Me,  How Sweet The Sound: My Life with God and Gospel and Remembering Whitney: A Mother’s Story of Life, Loss and The Night The Music Stopped.

TVGrapevine sends condolences to her loved ones during this difficult time.
