SULLIVAN AND SON: FUN FACTS ABOUT AHMED AHMED SULLIVAN AND SON
FUN FACTS ABOUT AHMED AHMED

Ahmed Ahmed makes us laugh every week on TBS's hit comedy series Sullivan and Son. He is charming, sweet and downright adorable. He recently talked to TVGrapevine in an exclusive interview about the show, his life and some fun projects he has on the horizon. Below are some of the highlights from our chat.

The Beginning: Ahmed is originally from Egypt and came to the USA in 1970. He grew up in California and at the age of nineteen decided to pursue a career in acting. He was mostly getting roles as terrorists and cab drivers, so it was suggested that the change his name. He refused, and decided to try his hand at comedy.

He has been doing comedy for twenty years and says he enjoys it because it allows him to have a voice. This all led to him becoming a part of Sullivan and Son, where he plays Ahmed, a role written especially for him by Steve Byrne.

Sullivan and Son: Ahmed describes his character as a hopeless romantic driver, who is a blue collar, working class guy. He loves the fact that he can live his dream of being on a sitcom and that Steve and the writing team write for his voice rather than making him into a stereotype. He also enjoys the fact that being on cable allows them to get away with more and push the envelope a bit more.

Another thing he enjoys about the show (which he describes as Cheers meets All In The Family meets Married With Children)  is the fact that it has such a diverse cast of Tony winners, Broadway actors and even the dad from The Wonder Years. He loves seeing how everyone has evolved since day one and thinks that season three is turning out to be the best season to date.

What's Next: Now that season three of Sullivan and Son is about to wrap up filming, the cast has plans to go on a seven week comedy tour. He says he loves doing this because it gives him a chance to interact with fans and allow them to connect with the characters. He is very grateful for their support and loves that he gets to meet them after each show.

In addition, he plans on doing more solo shows in Vegas, London and the Middle East and also has a documentary coming out called Just Like Us, which is about comedians in the Middle East.

People Would Be Surprised To Know: Although he is passionate about comedy, he also loves to cook. In fact, he was contemplating becoming a chef before getting into stand up comedy. His favorite thing to make is fruit on the grill and he has dubbed himself a grillmaster.

Thank you to Ahmed and his team for this interview and be sure to keep watching Sullivan and Son on TBS

And he's adorable off-stage, too. Ahmed and I did around 200 Muslim-Jewish "Laugh In Peace" stand-up shows, starting in 2002, including a mini-tour in New England. He arrived at our home in Vermont and called his mom, in CA, to tell her he arrived safely. "That's good, Ahmed," she said. "In Vermont, you should meet with our people. Go to a nice Arabic cafe." To which Ahmed replied, "Mom. I'm drinking a cup of coffee. I AM the Arabic cafe."
