LOST AND HEROES: AS SEASONS ENDLOST AND HEROES
AS SEASONS END
by LindaM

This will be the last year for LOST and HEROES has only a slim chance of being renewed. As shows like this (innovative, unusual, and highly controversial) come to a seemingly end, we need to look back at the high and low points for both shows. I’m going to touch on common ground for both.

High ground: Both shows started out with a bang. They had inventive stories to tells and drew the fans in. They believe din story-telling and told age old themes and gave them new life.

High ground: They made us care (during the first year) for the characters. If a character is well written you love and hate them. Sylar and Locke are both some of the best characters ever created for television and both have seen role reversals such as I never thought American television would try. I won’t go into the role reversals as it will give too much away.

Low ground: Both shows suffered from multiple weak seasons which cost both shows viewers. When a show rambles, viewers get frustrated and leave. I was only brought back to Lost because of the promise of a return to season 1. I only caught the last season of Heroes in bits and pieces because I had heard that storylines would be wrapped up.

Lost right now knows that this is the final season and we’ve been promised answers to our questions. So far, for each question answered, two new ones have appeared. The storyline has taken a new twist which makes our old friend Locke appears as the villain. In addition, two universes seem to exist but are they simultaneous or is one real and the other a parallel universe. Only time will answer this question.

The show Heroes doesn’t know if it will return to NBC or not. This last season, Redemption, promised us that the Heroes cast would find redemption and for much of the season you had to wonder how. I must say as a casual viewer that I found last night’s season ending amazing to watch. Yes, I’ve seen the story line played out on various shows and movies and plots of books. Yet the angle that they took Sylar was a nice twist and actually one I predicted after Quinto made his movie debut in Star Trek. Sylar was the one fans wanted redeemed and received it last night! As a hero and working with Peter, Sylar had to convince people hw was good. This was a good move on the part of the show as is the start of the next chapter “Brave New World.” The snapshot we were given of the next chapter also served as a credible show finale if it doesn’t return (and no I won’t tell you what it was!).

The carnival element used by Heroes last night added both a sense of color and and actually to me an element of horror. The carnival is thought of as a place to have fun with rides and shows. The terror element is found in what is hidden behind the faces and rides and how quickly things can go wrong. The carnival hid the evil and the heroes (in black here) had to step forward and combat it. Do they reveal why the horror is lurking? No they save lives.

And a quick note here to the writers/executives of Heroes. Thank you so much for giving us a look at Hiro’s lost love Charlie. I had forgotten that Jayma Mays (now Emma on Glee!) played the role. When we learn her story of finding herself in the past and see her now as a senior citizen, we see that disappearances on Heroes aren’t always what we expect.

I hope Lost takes note of the way this finale/season ending episode plays out. This is the kind of suspenseful episode I’d love to see them do. Not only wrap up the story but give the fans something that they want to see. Answer our questions, save our heroes, and somehow make Locke good again! If Lost can fulfill this vision (as Heroes did last night), fans will be happy.
