Our journalist Sammi-T had an opportunity to attend a news confernece for The Biggest Loser and interview Mo Dewalt. The transcript of the chat is well worth reading for any Biggest loser fan.
Coordinator: Hello and welcome to the Biggest Loser conference call. At the request of NBC this call is being recorded for instant replay purposes; a transcript of the call is also being made. With us on today’s call is Mo Dewalt. Also on the call is Jill Carmen of NBC. Jill Carmen: Thank you everybody for joining us today and sorry for the late start but Mo is on now and happy to take your questions. And if I could just ask you to please limit your initial questions to two questions each so each outlet gets a turn. Thank you. Coordinator: Thank you. If you would like to ask a question throughout today’s call press star 1. The first question is from Paulette Cohen, ET Online. Paulette Cohen: Good morning Mo. Mo Dewalt: Morning. Paulette Cohen: I was really surprised by the vote last night. I mean, I really, really thought everybody was going to send Tracy home. Can you talk a little big about how people felt about her at the ranch? And can you talk about your decision to volunteer to leave? Mo Dewalt: Well, you know, I think that at the ranch Tracy’s had control. And when someone has control like that and pretty much does what they want to do it pretty much leaves a bad taste in your mouth. And that’s what everybody had. I told them it was, you know, it was an ill feeling because Tracy wasn't really like that she was just in a bad place and with the hospital thing and not being able to work out; that was really tough for her. So the true Tracy would not have done that; she just wanted to stay and experience the ranch. Paulette Cohen: Okay and what about your decision though to volunteer to leave? Mo Dewalt: My decision was based on so many different things; it was based on the injury that I just with my foot. It was based on the fact that I had lost six pounds and everybody else had lost seven. I just thought it would send a bad signal that, you know, it just wasn't fair at that particular point. And I just could not continue on. And I was the one that lost the least amount of weight. Paulette Cohen: Okay thank you. Coordinator: Nina Tyler, People Magazine. Nina Tyler: Hi Mo. Mo Dewalt: How you doing? Nina Tyler: I'm wondering what was the worst habit that you had from before the Biggest Loser that you can now say that you no longer have? Mo Dewalt: It’s between smoking and eating. I loved fast foods with a passion because I stay on the go constantly and working with the kids, going from school to school and I didn't have time to sit down and have a meal. So I just - I would go to McDonalds or Burger King or something, you know, and I'd eat a big sandwich and I'd keep on going. I think that was probably the worst habit that I had; eating improperly and eating fast foods. I think that was the biggest problem that I had. Nina Tyler: Okay thank you. And also what kind of lessons from the ranch were you able to integrate into the youth mentoring program that you have? Mo Dewalt: Almost everything. I teach a lot of mental toughness and discipline and structure. And one of the main reasons I came on the show was because I wanted to show them that, you know, yes I can do this - not just teach it to you but I can do it as well. So since we've been back the food habits have been changed. The way they think about food. I don't know if you saw the show last night but a little bit of the things - class that I had with the kids telling them that, you know, apples or oranges, you know, it’s good for you; it helps you run better. It helps you be a better athlete. And these are the things that they looking for anyway then I tell them about the diseases that I had and that I was able to change my life around not being a diabetic anymore and not having high blood pressure anymore. So I think I pretty much got their attention but the discipline and knowing what it is that you’re supposed to do, the knowledge, and it just putting everything into action and doing what you have to do no matter what. Nina Tyler: Okay. And were a lot of kids watching you on the show? Mo Dewalt: Beg pardon, I didn't hear you. Nina Tyler: Were a lot of the kids in your youth mentoring program watching you on the show? Mo Dewalt: About 95-105 children from what I'm told were watching the show constantly. Nina Tyler: Oh wow. That’s awesome, that’s awesome. Well that was my final question. Thank you so much. Mo Dewalt: All righty. Coordinator: Leslie Bruce, Us Weekly Magazine. Leslie Bruce: Hi, Mo, how are you? Mo Dewalt: All right how you doing? Leslie Bruce: I'm good thank you. So going back to Tracy for a second so she’s kind of turning out to be this season’s villain, so to speak. Was she really that calculated on the show and do you think that she realized the full extent of her actions? Mo Dewalt: I think so. I think that, again, Tracy was in a bad spot. She was injured; she wasn't allowed to work out. And that - the panic mode continued to set in on a constant time, you know, so she conferred with me a lot of times on some of her decisions; she told me - asked me for my opinion, I gave her my opinion. And, you know, she made some decisions. Now the thing that I tell everybody is take a look at her decisions; they were not really bad decisions. They came out pretty good for her and for us. And pretty much she was not the only one playing the game, I mean, there was other people playing the game as well. So if you ask somebody what are you going to give me if I put you on the scale and they said nothing then what do you do, you give them what they want? No, I don't think so. I think she did - I think she acted appropriately, I really do, the majority of the time I do. I mean, sometimes she would act in haste but the majority of the time I think she did very well. Leslie Bruce: Okay perfect. And then now that you’re at home how will you continue your weight loss? Mo Dewalt: I work out four times a day. I'm eating my meals and keeping with my calories and I'm walking six miles a night and I'm doing about 150-200 sit-ups every night. So I'm staying extremely, extremely active. I've been working on the (village) and keeping that kind of - that distraction away from me. And I'm just really, really just pushing on and concentrating on my weight loss. Leslie Bruce: Perfect. And how much have you lost to date? Mo Dewalt: To date I lost 80 pounds. Leslie Bruce: Wow, congratulations. Thank you so much. Mo Dewalt: Thanks. Coordinator: Jennifer Lenhart, In Touch Weekly. Jennifer Lenhart: Hi Mo. Mo Dewalt: How you doing? Jennifer Lenhart: Good. How are you? Mo Dewalt: I'm doing pretty good. Jennifer Lenhart: So I actually wanted to talk a little bit more about Tracy too. Did she after you offered to - or you told everyone that you really should be the one to go home did she come to you and thank you for doing that for her? Mo Dewalt: They didn't get a chance to. I basically just said what I felt and told them that I thought it was the right thing to do. I didn't want to go home. I didn't want Tracy to go home either. But somebody had to go, and at that particular point in time, you know, I was injured; I don't think I could help them in the challenge the next day, (unintelligible) next challenge. So I really thought more about the team than I did about, you know, whether I was going home or not. So I just decided that, you know, I can finish this at home. I can heal. I can do - I'll be all right and I need to check on my kids and my family and everything at home anyway so, you know, it really was a really mixed feeling for me because I didn't really want to go. Jennifer Lenhart: And how has your transformation affected your family? Mo Dewalt: My wife has lost close to 35 pounds, my daughter has lost close to 40 pounds, my son has lost 30. I have people who are within the village who are really - the parents now - I normally I work with the children. But the parents now have really come on board and turned into a family thing now to where the parents are trying to lose weight and eat healthy. It’s been pretty major. Jennifer Lenhart: That’s amazing. Great well thank you so much. Mo Dewalt: Thank you. Coordinator: Robin Roth, tvguide.com. Robin Roth: Hi Mo. Thanks for doing the call. Were you hoping Tracy would keep you on her team? And were you happy that you were chosen to be with Bob? Mo Dewalt: Yeah, I was extremely satisfied with her choice and her decision. I know in her mind (unintelligible) because of my injuries and I was kind of in the middle as far as weight loss that if she had to stack her team I was kind of iffy. But I thought that we had enough connection and we were close enough that she would want to keep me with her and she said I was her first choice so that made me extremely happy. Didn't get to work much with Jillian so Bob and I had connected so I really felt comfortable being with him, it was the perfect choice for me. Robin Roth: And how did your coach mentality help you on the ranch? Mo Dewalt: Well the coach mentality actually came in quite often whenever I got tired, whenever the pain got unbearable. I always tell the children, you know, for the young people I was training and, you know, no pain, no gain, no sacrifice, glory; all those words that I would tell them. And in my head and I would tell them always to try to reach down and get just a little more; you could go a little bit farther. And those are the things that echoed in my head. You know, if I tell someone to do something I need to be able to do it myself. So it was that that really stepped in along with being, you know, ex-athlete that really helped too because I just didn't know about the word quit; it just - it just doesn't happen in my mind. Robin Roth: All right thanks so much. Mo Dewalt: Okay. Coordinator: Alex Davies, Flash News. Alex Davies: Hi Mo. Thanks so much for doing the call today. Mo Dewalt: How you doing? Alex Davies: I'm good, how are you? Mo Dewalt: I'm doing pretty good. Alex Davies: Wonderful. Now in watching like the recap videos like, you know, how you’re doing now your daughter said how much she thinks that you’re like Superman to her and it was really, really sweet. Now how does that feel for you hearing your daughter kind of see you as the hero and do you really think you are almost a hero for her and maybe some of the kids you work with? Mo Dewalt: Well I didn't - I've not heard that Superman thing. I think Alan thought it was the one that said that he was Superman. But my daughter, you know, she just - they call me hero; they think I’m a hero. And I just don't think - I'm not, I mean, I just try to explain to them and give them an example of who their real heroes are, you know, and I'm just a man that tried to lose some weight and would like to share that experience with other people. And it was hard but it doesn't make me a hero, it just makes me a man who tried to accomplish something and hopefully I'll finish that. Alex Davies: And how’s it been with the kids you work with? Do they really look up to you now? Do they kind of ask you for advice a lot or kind of really support you in your weight loss quest? Mo Dewalt: Well they always help, you know, they - not so much the weight loss. And I even wonder how I got away with that. I would sit here and I would teach them, you know, eat properly so you can train properly and do these things. And I'm looking at myself and I'm overweight. I think they knew about the injury, you know, they just gave me exception. But now they realize well hey coach, you know, you’re running now which they've never seen me run before. You’re doing these things us. I'm out stretching them and they just really are enthused by the work ethic that they see in me. And now they can put a kind of a picture in their mind instead of the old war stories that people tell them about me and how I played ball and the things that I did, they've got a picture in their own mind and they realize, you know, hey, he’s got this (unintelligible), he actually is doing this. Alex Davies: Awesome. Mo Dewalt: You know... Alex Davies: Okay well thank you so much. Mo Dewalt: You’re welcome. Coordinator: Brandi Koskie, dietsinreview.com. Brandi Koskie: Good afternoon Coach Mo. Mo Dewalt: How you doing? Brandi Koskie: I am perfect; how are you today? Mo Dewalt: I'm doing pretty good. Brandi Koskie: Good. I'm curious if it was hard being Tracy’s partner? Mo Dewalt: It was difficult when - I knew the real Tracy and I knew her heart. And I know that everybody wasn't seeing that and they were caught up in game play and caught up in losing weight and caught up in the decision that she made when I, you know, I kept saying over again, you know, you guys got decisions of your own. I mean, they were upset before the final results were even show. They, you know, Tracy made - put them on the scale and they were angry at her before they even got the final results. And I'm going why are you angry when you don't know whether you’re doing well or not. It’s not Tracy, it’s us. You know, my main concern when I got on the show was if I can stay above the yellow line then I'll be fine; that was my only strategy. And it shouldn't have been anything else for anybody. So can tell them that but they just had - they didn't like Tracy or anybody having control of their life and I understood that. But that’s what made it hard. Brandi Koskie: Okay. And then now that you’re back home and, you know, you’re involvement obviously with the kids has really changed do you feel like you’re actually living by example now and what is that like for you? Mo Dewalt: You know, it is so - that’s probably the most pleasing thing that has happened to me that - I can no longer just tell a child to go home and eat some fruit and don't eat too much sugar, things like that because you have to train. I can actually show them this is what I eat, this is what my meals consist of and I'm not even in training, I'm doing it to live; I'm doing it to be healthy. And they look at that and so far the response has been amazing, their parents are just telling - I mean I've got the parents involved. The parents are definitely eating the foods now and getting rid of the sodas and all the things, I mean, they just totally (unintelligible) everything about them. And I am just so grateful and it’s probably the most exciting and pleasing part of this journey that I've taken. Brandi Koskie: Well congratulations, you've made some tremendous progress and we look forward to seeing you at finale. Mo Dewalt: Thank you so much. Coordinator: Delaina Dixon, delainadixon.com. Delaina Dixon: Hi Coach Mo, how you doing? Mo Dewalt: All right, how you doing? Delaina Dixon: I'm doing just fine. Hey I wanted to know more about that win that you spoke of. When they had the competition and you said you felt this kind of win and you knew Tracy was going to win the competition. Did you talk about that with anyone else? And what exactly were you feeling? Mo Dewalt: I mean Tracy has an amazing love and amazing competitor and she just - it’s almost like she wills herself to win. And when it was a competition I kind of felt that I wasn't going to get a chance to spin and I was right behind Tracy so - and actually I told her, you know, Tracy’s going to win this, you know, and I said it kind of jokingly. And truthfully the wind began to blow and she just basically - I was (unintelligible) and I told her I'm taking her to Las Vegas when all this is over; I've got to put some money on Tracy. Delaina Dixon: Sounds like a very, very smart move. Well where is your health right now? Have you gotten a clean bill of health from your doctor about your foot and all the other things you were dealing with before you got to the ranch? Mo Dewalt: You know, I am actually fighting through the pain again. I have a - some surgeries lined up for sometime next year maybe. And the doctors definitely want me to do it. I refused. I am not going to let anything stop me on this journey that I've started. And I've just learned to fight through the pain. And I just - I tell the doctors to, hey, you know, I've been in pain for 23 years; I can deal with this a little bit longer. Delaina Dixon: Is that on your foot? Mo Dewalt: Oh my foot and all the other issues that I've been dealing with. They were pretty - and it caused it a lot of pain. It makes it difficult to work out. It almost - not impossible to run but difficult to run. And it hindered - but, you know, like I said, I mean, it started hurting I said I'm not going to pay attention to it. I have to finish my six miles. I've got to do what I've got to do. And it is what it is. I'm just going to keep on doing it until I get it done. Delaina Dixon: All right well take care of yourself, Coach Mo. Mo Dewalt: Thank you so much. Delaina Dixon: Okay bye-bye. Mo Dewalt: Bye-bye. Coordinator: Troy Rogers, the deadbolt.com. Troy Rogers: Hi Mo. Sorry to see you go. Mo Dewalt: Oh sorry to go. Troy Rogers: Now I wanted to know what did you enjoy most about the ranch and what did you like the least? Mo Dewalt: The games is the least, definitely - having to send someone home and the game play - got involved. I mean these things were definitely the worst ever. I never wanted to do it in the first place. I refused to do it. And it even started affecting me somewhat, you know, because I was very tempted to write someone’s name down. And I didn't want to. I didn't want to do that on somebody else’s pain so I just said, you know, I'm not going to do this. So that was the worst. The best was - there’s so many things, the people on the show. The caring people that really cared about my health. The contestants, you know, we were a loving group of people that really actually cared about one another. It was just so much to begin from that I can't even begin to pick one particular thing; it was just so many, many positive things that are wonderful on that ranch. Troy Rogers: Okay cool. Now I wanted to know how did you and Tracy decide on a strategy because from what we saw it looked like she was just making up her own decisions out there. Mo Dewalt: You know, she would tell me what she thought and then she would ask me for my opinion. Troy Rogers: Okay. Mo Dewalt: I would give my opinion and she would say, okay, well what do you think about this and I would tell her. And no really strategy, you know, she just - after she taken away from us when she had to decide on the teams so Tracy - she didn't get a chance to talk to me about who she wanted but she knew that I wanted Bob as my trainer; she knew that. And everything else basically was Tracy’s decision. And I told her that, you know, anything that you do - I'm your partner, I will back you 100%. I would never ever, you know, turn my back on you so just do what you think is best and I will back you 100%. Troy Rogers: Okay great. Continued weight loss. Mo Dewalt: Thank you so much. Coordinator: (Sammi Turno), TV Grapevine. (Sammi Turno): Hi, good morning. How are you doing today? Mo Dewalt: I'm doing good. How you doing? (Sammi Turno): I'm good thank you. My first question is what else do you hope to bring to the children that you mentor and what do you plan on - do you plan on going around America to help children become healthier? Mo Dewalt: That is definitely my plan. I mean I know - at one time Louisville, Kentucky and Kentucky was one of the most obese places in America. And that’s one of the reasons why I would be - before the show I've been doing things trying to combat that. Our new research I found out that we’re not in the top 10 anymore but we’re still a very obese place. So there are other children in Memphis and Indianapolis and other places that I need to go to to try to come up with a strategy to try and combat this and so these kids won't be so sick and unhealthy. So, yes, and that is - that’s one of my major, major thoughts; how can I take this on the road and attract not just the kids, you know, anymore, it is pretty much adults like myself to let - disabled people; I was totally disabled. And I am totally disabled and they said I couldn't do these things, well I did them. You know, and I need to let people know just because you’re disabled don't mean that you can't get up and you can lose the weight and you - and you can do anything that you want to do and you can be healthier. Am I still in pain? Do I still suffer from all these things? Sure but I don't have the diabetes anymore. I don't have the high blood pressure anymore. So it makes everything a lot more easier so to speak. (Sammi Turno): Yeah actually and I think they have a good role model in you. My other question is have you found healthier versions of your favorite foods? Mo Dewalt: Actually I'm kind of a creature of habit. And when I realized - well because I guess chicken was one of my favorites but I've taken chicken and things like that and I made them my consistent meal. I figured if it’s not broke don't fix it. So I eat a lot of chicken constantly even, you know, during the day for my snack all the time just little strips of chicken; just things that I know that it’s going to taste well for me but I don't have to eat a lot of it. So it'd be between chicken and maybe the sweet potatoes. I was a potato fanatic and I can't have mashed potatoes anymore so I do the sweet potatoes and it is - it’s delicious. As a matter of fact I've got it fixed up where it’s almost like a desert now instead of a (unintelligible). So it’s - those two I think would be the most. (Sammi Turno): Cool. I think you just solved my problem for dinner tonight there. Well congratulations on all your success. My mom and I both watch; we’re both very proud of you. We loved you on the show. Mo Dewalt: Thank you so much, I appreciate it. (Sammi Turno): And good luck with everything. No problem. Mo Dewalt: Thank you. I'll be back. (Sammi Turno): Yes you will, we’re very excited. Mo Dewalt: Okay bye-bye. (Sammi Turno): Bye. Coordinator: Troy Rogers, the deadbolt.com. Troy Rogers: Hi Mo, back again. Mo Dewalt: How you doing? Troy Rogers: I wanted to know after the first day when you wound up in the hospital what were you thinking? Mo Dewalt: Am I in that bad of shape. You know, basically I was refusing to go to the hospital. It was - on EMS and the show’s request that I go and I said well okay I'll go but I won't stay. And when I got there I ended up staying for a few days. So I was trying to figure out what is wrong with me, you know, what - how can I be in that bad of shape? And it kind of set in a reality to let me know, okay Mo, you know, this is where you are, what are you going to do about it? So I said okay it’s time to go to work. And when I got back and everybody was so far ahead of me and I had a weigh-in coming I said you know what I'm going to work. And it was hard for them to keep me out of the gym because I was still under some restrictions. I would do things in my room. And I just would find hiding places just to try to do some sit-ups or pushups or something just to try to get myself so I could stay at least another week. And I think that’s when I dropped the 19 pounds. So it was a deal - it was difficult. I was afraid that I was going to go home because I only had a couple days to work out. Troy Rogers: Right, okay. And also from watching at home the tension appeared very thick around Tracy. How bad was it actually on the ranch? Mo Dewalt: You know, I don't think it was as bad as it seemed. I think that again having control over people’s lives and Tracy was definitely - she was taking control - I think that they felt that she was doing it just because she wanted to and that’s the kind of person that she was. No, I mean, she was panicking; she was in a place of sheer panic. Not being (unintelligible) I was; she couldn't work out, she couldn't go to the gym. And she couldn’t' do anything. She just had to eat and drink to try to get her strength back. And that was difficult for her. She didn't want to go home; she wanted to lose the weight. So I kind of felt a protective mode coming in; I wanted to protect her. I wanted her to experience this. Everybody should experience the ranch. Every single person that is overweight and unhealthy needs (unintelligible) - hello? Troy Rogers: I'm still here. Mo Dewalt: Okay. Yeah, I mean, yeah, it wasn't as bad as it seemed on TV she just - she had to make some decisions and people, you know, was a little upset (unintelligible) but she did well. Troy Rogers: Okay I was just surprised because the last weigh-in I think that was the first time I didn't see anybody ever cheer. Mo Dewalt: No it was the second time actually. And I made a comment about that and I felt - and I said I thought this was supposed to be inspirational to people and not one person cheered for this person who had lost an amazing amount of weight under all this pressure. And I didn't realize it happened again last night. So it was unusual and I thought that was - if anything was unfair and not right I thought that wasn't right. Troy Rogers: Yeah, I agree. Well yeah, thanks again Mo. Mo Dewalt: Thanks. Coordinator: And I show no further questions at this time. Jill Carmen: Thank you everybody for joining us today and thank you Mo for taking the time for the call. Mo Dewalt: Thank you so much. Jill Carmen: Okay, have a good day. Bye-bye. Mo Dewalt: Bye.
