I’ve had to wait to write this because I wanted to consider all the angles of the episode from Sunday. Sure it looks like some couples are catching all the breaks and Lance finally found himself out of contention. But the real question is: Did Lance bring this on himself? Lance was the racer I saw as the proverbial “Ugly American.” He was just too intent on getting from Point A to Point B and he didn’t mind who he took out in the process. His focus was so much on the game that he had lost touch with where they were and the experience. Lance lost touch with the common folk and thus lost me as a fan.
Lance seemed throughout the race to not understand this concept. He pushed people and used loud tones (almost shouting on several instances). The countryside and cultures didn’t seem to have any impact on Lance. A good example is what he did this week in the desert. Granted he was the last person to perform the task but he showed a huge disrespect for the people and the resources by pouring the last of the water out of the pot. In the Middle East water is valuable! By dumping the water, Lance not only showed a disrespect for the people but more importantly a disrespect for a valuable natural resource. Lance compared himself and Keri to the Maya a few weeks back. I mentioned in my last piece that the Maya was absorbed by the other cultures of Central and South America. What I didn’t mention is that they were forced to adapt to other cultures. Lance didn’t adapt to the cultures he visited. He tried to steam roll on through the tasks with only one goal in mind: the million dollar prize. I wish Lance and Keri well in their post race life and hope that if nothing else, Lance learns to respect all people, all nationalities, and most of all the value of natural resources. To give respect means that he gets respect! Tune into The Amazing Race on Sunday at 8/7c on CBS
