The Amazing RaceA Race for Dad CBS' The Amazing Race begins tonight in Vietnam after last week's 2 hour episode saw the teams crossing the start line, head to Tokyo with a pit stop, and continue on to Vietnam. Interestingly, there was no Detour feature in either of last week's legs of The Amazing Race. Is that a permanent change in this reality show? I don't know, but let's see about tonight's episode. At the end of the last leg, teams raced to a river boat on the Mekong Delta in Cai Be, Vietnam. Phil tells us privately that after all of the teams had arrived on board, the boat raised anchor and traveled to My Tho - racers know that they are traveling - they just don't know where they are going. As winners of the last leg of the race, Gary and Matt are first to receive the next clue - racers are to travel by taxi to Ho Chi Minh City. Once there, they must locate the Golden Dragon Puppet Theater and grab their next clue from the mouth of a dragon. Sam and Dan are becoming frustrated at not finding a taxi or knowing what to do. That doesn't bode well for them in this show - keeping a cool head and thinking under pressure is absolutely necessary. The Globetrotters head out from the pit stop. We learn from Big Easy that his dad passed away 2 days before taping began for the race. He reflects on the things he learned from his dad and his dad's encouragement for him (them) to win the race. Marcy admits to the camera that being in Vietnam is emotional for her because her father, a general was shot down there in 1968 and later rescued. She adds that she doesn't know how he survived - probably sheer will and adrenalin - and that's what she is made of too. As she and Ron are riding in the taxi and sees everyone smiling and waving she chokes up at how nice it is there and at the thought of how many died there too. The Globetrotters, Flight Time and Big Easy are first to arrive at the theater and get their clue. They said it was tricky and your timing had to be perfect because of the dragons were darting very quickly in the water. Think of the street dragons that you see during the Chinese New Year celebrations - now think the same thing, except much smaller and moving in the water (there are no people in the dragon of course) and that's what these look like. Inside the clue is a bullet and inside the bullet is a stamp with a picture of a building on it. TAR host, Phil Keoghan steps in at this point to let us know that teams must figure out that the building on the postage stamp is the post office in Ho Chi Minh City and that's where they will find their next clue. The Globetrotters find the post office and get their next clue. Detour - that answers that question ... Child's Play or Word Play. In Child's Play, teams make their way to a park and select a concrete animal. They must take the animal down the bumpy path and collect 5 balloons from vendors along the way. After delivering the animals and balloons to the children's playground, they will receive their next clue. In Word Play, teams go to a hotel's observation deck and watch the heavy traffic below to find 6 Vietnamese letters moving in the traffic (they show an example and you can see a letter painted on the top of a crate and another on the top of a cyclist's hat). After a security guard tells them they have the right letters, teams must leave the hotel and find help from local residents to arrange the letters into a word - Phil tells us the word should be the one for "independence".Marcy and Ron are at the dragon theater and they got their bullet, but they don't realize the top of the bullet unscrews to reveal the clue. They do get it - it's difficult to tell how much time they lost. The Globetrotters pick Child's Play and they work well together to apparently finish the task as the next closest team starts the task. So far all of the teams have selected Child's Play. Flight Time and Big Easy get their next clue to travel to Dien Co 008 - a busy intersection where they will find their next clue. Ron and Marcy do Word Play. They seem to get 6 letters pretty quickly, but 1 of the letters is incorrect. They go back to look again at the traffic, Meanwhile, mishaps are happening in the park. The girls are pushing their animal along on their dolly when the dolly breaks. Dan stops and goes back to try to help them. The girls don't feel that it's fair for them because they should be trying to do the best that they can in the race so they thank them, but tell them to go ahead. Justin and Zev are pushing a giraffe on their dolly when it falls and breaks. The directions in the clue say that if an animal breaks, then racers must pick up all of the pieces of the animal if they want to get the balloons.Marcy and Ron realize their mistake and get approval from the security guard to continue with the task to re-arrange the letters into a word. They are looking at signs to try to figure out the word rather that get help from people in the area to figure out the word. The Globetrotters reach the next clue box - Roadblock. One team member will work in the business of breaking down electronics. Phil explains that in Vietnam almost everything is recycled and in this task, one member must completely take apart and sort 2 vcr's - when they are done, they will receive their next clue.Meghan and Cheyne are close behind the Globetrotters as are Gary and Matt. Marcy and Ron try Old Cap as their rearranged words. Thy are told no. They do ask some nearby people after that and they look at the letters and say they think they know what word the racers need. Ron and Marcy say that it is supposed to be a well known word and the young man smiles, nods, and says yes. The Globetrotters finish with the roadblock and receive their next clue to travel across the city to the next pit stop - Reunification Palace, famous as being the site where a tank crashed through the gates and ended the Vietnam War. Meghan and Cheyne and Gary and Matt are right behind on the way to the pit stop. Marcy and Ron get the Detour correct and receive their clue to head to the location of the roadblock. Sam and Dan and Brian and Erika are headed for the palace. The brothers are again having trouble getting a taxi and Sam sighs and says he wishes Dan would calm down. There is a footrace to the mat at the pit stop between the ball players and Cheyne and Meghan. It is very close but both of the Globetrotters reached the mat before both Cheyne and Meghan got there. Phil welcomes Flight Time and Big Easy as Team # 1. As winners of this leg, they win a trip from Travelocity to Aruba. Cheyne and Meghan groan when they hear about the trip that they came so close to winning. The 2 teams are quite friendly at the mat and they predict that there will be more sprints to the mat between the 2 teams in future legs. Cheyne and Meghan are Team # 2. Gary and Matt arrive as Team # 3. Kari and Lance are walking around the city looking for the intersection and bickering. Definitely don't see these 2 working well enough together in the race to make it to the end. Brian and Erika arrive as Team # 4. Sam and Dan arrive as Team # 5. Lance and Kari are at the roadblock - Lance decides it would be the manly thing to do to just smash the vcr's up rather than taking screws and bolts out. Marcy and Ron arrive at the roadblock. The girls arrive as Team # 6. Mika and Canaan arrive as Team # 7. The remaining teams are in cabs and driving toward the palace. Zev and Justin and Kari and Lance have a foot race to the mat. Zev and Justin arrive first as Team # 8. Kari and Lance check in as Team # 9. Phil says that he thinks Lance is the most competitive on the race - to which Lance responds with an invitation to get down and wrestle then and there. Phil says he can see how big and fit Lance is and declines the invitation with his trademark smile. Marcy and Ron arrive at the pit stop and Phil tells tem they are last to arrive and are eliminated from the race. Both are a bit disappointed, but still smiling. Phil says that he thinks that they wanted a lot more in the race. Ron says he's a little disappointed while Marcy says that she's grateful and tells the story of her dad's experience in Vietnam. She ends by saying that he always said you can't hit a homerun unless you step up to the plate and for her The Amazing Race was stepping up to the plate.Next week on CBS' The Amazing Race Zev performs a Roadblock by putting on a monkey costume while another team breaks the cardinal rule...... and loses their passports.
