American Idol - Adam Lambert

American Idol
Jen Dishes More On Idol

The dreaded Disco Week brought some great surprises, including a GREAT (obviously lip synched) Paula-choreographed group performance.  And although I can somewhat see why Matt is still there, the boy should have packed his bags if it was based solely on his cringe worthy Bee Gees performance.

However, that's not how AI works, and the double elimination finally put Anoop and Lil out of WEEKS of joint bottom-three misery.  Kris pulled out a really great down tempo Latin redux of "She Works Hard for the Money" that showed off his ability as an arranger, and Adam Lambert killed it once again with a ballad version of "If I Can't Have You".   These guys know who they are as musicians, have the chops to back it up, and are going to sashay (well, at least Adam is) right into the finals.

Top 3 Performances:
3.  Danny Gokey
2.  Kris Allen
1.  Adam Lambert

Top 3 Awkward Moments:
3.  Simon tells Ryan to shut it.
2.  Lil trying to defend her musical choices to the judges' blank stares.
1.  Allison sings "Hot Stuff" with a leeetle too much conviction.

Rat Pack Standards:
Next week, performers will start to sing two songs each.  I LOVE this part of the competition because these guys can really show their range within a genre - or redeem themselves in case one song doesn't go that well.  It's great that this week's theme (which has had a slightly different incarnation the past as Big Band Week), has been moved towards the end of the competition so that we get a chance to hear both an uptempo and ballad from each contestant.  Matt Giraud will definitely have the Rat Pack styling/vibe down, and will no doubt bring the piano out for some Sammy Davis Jr.  Adam's theatricality will serve him well here, though I hope that he doesn't end up looking like a cruise ship singer - as I'm sure Simon will be chomping at the bit to accuse someone of that.  Kris' strength as a singer-songwriter has allowed him to really work songs into his style from week to week, so I think he can pull through even though this is not the obvious musical style for him.  And Alison and Danny, our two gravel-voiced singers, can definitely "sing their faces off".  However, for Alison, I'm not sure if "shopping in the men's department" will be an advantage or disadvantage, but I think that this will be a great chance for her to show a funner side (and hopefully tone down her Hot Topic outfits a little bit).

Once again, it looks like we don't have a mentor, but Taylor Hicks will be coming back for a performance during the results show.
