American Idol

 American Idol
Jen Dishes On Idol
Tuesday 8/7c on FOX

Last week's Michael Jackson theme on American Idol could have been a total disaster, but these are the strongest Top 12/13 Finalists Anerican Idol has ever had, and they put on a really solid show.  Let's relive some of the highlights from last week!

Top 3 Performances:
3.  Danny Gokey
2.  Matt Giraud
1.  Alexis Grace

Top 3 Inadvertent Show Stealers:
3.  The Matrix screensaver used during Anoop's performance.
2.  Danny's "Groomsman-Gone-Wild" dance moves.
1.  Megan's MILF mom - HOLY HOTNESS!!!

Top 3 FUBARs:
3.  Anoop's unfortunate collar-up situation.
2.  Lambert giggling throughout his song - a song with racial themes!!!  Dude, I know being serious is not your thing, but if there were anytime to take it down a notch, this would definitely be it.
1.  Kelly Clarkson's hot mess-ness!  Dry hair, a Bar Mitzvah mom outfit and not getting into her performance until about 45 seconds in?!  Looks like somebody could use a little "Focus" Vitamin Water!

Anyway, let's move onto next week and take a look at what's in store for the Top 11!

Grand Ole Opry Week:
For next week's Grand Ole Opry theme, the contestants will only be able to sing songs from artists who were inducted into the Grand Ole Opry.  This will be the most natural fit for Michael, Scott and possibly Megan.  I hope that with the right song choice, solid singers like Danny, Alexis and Lil will be able to bring it no matter what.  However, I am really REALLY REALLY dreading whatever it is that Lambert is gonna pull out.  DREADING.  On the other hand, I'm definitely looking forward to Megan's outfit - I think Glam Squad will go nuts with her and the country theme!

To keep with the country theme, next week's former AI winner/performer is Carrie Underwood.  AI producers:  why are you using all the actual stars up front?!?!  Other than Kelly and Carrie, anyone else who comes back will just bring an awkward "SNL alumni returning to guest host" vibe.   Now the only thing we have to look forward to is hearing poor Taylor Hicks talk about his self-released album that dropped last week.

Anyway, also joining Carrie are fellow Grand Ole Opry inductees Randy Travis and Brad Paisley.  Randy will also be mentoring.   Though I love watching the mentors, not much as been revealed about what other legends will be dropping in this season - probably because they blew the Season Eight budget on the "Idol Mansion". Now the only guarantee we have for this season are a lot more craaazy behind-the-scenes videos of the contestants dogpiling on a bowling ball, jumping in the pool, running up and down the stairs, and getting lost in the steam room, etc.etc.etc.  Ugh!  It's so frustrating!  A bunch of people living together in a mansion is a recipe for catfights, not pharmaceutical commercial-style activity montages!

Judges' Save:
Moving on, one new thing I'm really looking forward to this season is the "Judges' Save" mechanism.  I know there will be a point where we'll all be like "Thank God for this!", but I'm glad they didn't use it last week on either Jasmine or Jorge.  Could you imagine them singing Grand Ole Opry songs?!  HELL no.  However, it is truly awful to make a person sing first to save their lives before finding out his/her fate.  Nine times out of ten, re-singing the same song that got you in the bottom two is not going to help you.  At least on So You Think You Can Dance, the person gets to do a solo of his/her own choice!

Question of the week: Is the "Judges' Save" good or bad?  Please leave your comments.
