Side note: Earlier today, it occurred to me how crazy it is that 2/3 of the current Top 12 are dudes! There are only three girls right now: Alexis, Alison and Lil! The ladies are getting squashed this year and I hope this Wild Card will even things out - see, not separating the boys and girls during the semi-finals DID skew the results. Also, before we go into the Wild Card performances, I have to correct my statement from last night saying that only one person will make it out of the Wild Card. What was I thinking?! THREE people will be chosen by the judges to make it through to the finals! However, there rumors that there might be FOUR. Dun dun dun!!!! Jesse Langseth starts out waaay off with "Tell Me Someting Good". It gets a little better, but she is having tons of fun and really working the crowd, though she still doesn't have "it". Going off key is not helping her cause, plus frumping up outfit with a fug bolero top was not a good idea. Randy didn't dig it because of the bad notes, Kara loves her swagger, Paula thinks she has a lot of soul, and Simon thought it was indulgent - though better than her first performance. The other judges give a lame defense that the song was supposed to be indulgent/sexy. Matt Giraud is up and he just freaking kills it from the moment he steps on the stage with "Who's Loving You" by Smokey Robinson. I hate his fedora/JT scarf, but he's finally singing a great bluesy song that suits his voice and attitude. I thought it was killin' and over waaay too soon! I could have listened to him all night! What an improvement from his performance last week, which I had to fast forward through! Yeaaaaaah! He HAS to make it through, or I'll freaking throw a fit. Kara thought he was great, though there were some over-the-top riffs. Paula said he was in the right zone and that last week's Coldplay was not "him". Simon says it was a billion times better than last week, and his only criticism is that he hates what he's wearing - thank you! Then Simon messes up by saying Matt reminds him of Taylor Hicks - WHAT?! Randy says he is gonna scare the other contestants with his skills and give them a run for their money. Now we have Megan, who has thankfully straightened her hair. The Daryl Hannah "Splash" look never works for anyone - even Daryl Hannah! However, she is still doing her ridiculous dance. She is singing "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstall and I really like her take on the song, but Megan's still got an amateur feel coming off of her. Plus, her last note is offffff. Paula said she picked the right song and had a lot of joy. Simon really likes her and thinks she's very current - and the vocal issues didn't matter. Randy agrees that her vocals don't matter with her quirkiness. Kara thinks AI needs her for her uniqueness and variety. I think the judges are copping out here by choosing personality/appeal over vocal ability. Von Smith is up, and he starts out pretty shaky with "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word". I still don't understand his outfit choice - or the fact that he looks like the Pillsbury Dough Boy's son. However, he gets MUCH better as he gets into the belting segments of the song. I think he has problems with emotional connection. He looks nervous as he puts the mic back on the stand - like he couldn't wait to get it over with. Simon says he's become boring and serious, and Randy was perplexed about the song choice. Kara says it was even more than serious - it was dark. She thinks he has what it takes, but that he hasn't hit his stride yet. Paula starts off by saying that she's "studied" the way he performs, and that he doesn't let his essence show when he thinks too hard about the notes. It basically boils down to him being talented, but not really ready. You can see it in his eyes during the critique - he is thinking too hard and dying inside. Jasmine Murray is next, all smiley throughout her interview. She goes Disney with Christina Aguilera's "Reflection". I think she looks like she should be in a beauty pageant. Philipino girls (and boys) across America are thinking it could be themselves up there right now. She proves she has more vocal skills than she has ever shown before, though it's far from perfect or original. Randy says the song was too big for her, though it was much better than last time. Kara says she's confused because she didn't realized that Jasmine had such a big voice v. a pop voice. Paula loved her determination, though there were some problems with the notes. Simon cuts into Paula for not giving Jasmine enough credit. Paula defends herself, and gives Simon an Indian rug burn while he says that Jasmine just put herself back in the running. Now it's Ricky Braddy bringing hipster chic to the AI stage - vest, skinny jeans, and faux hawk? I feel like he's every dude I see on my morning commute through Williamsburg, Brooklyn! So his song choice of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" is kind of painful. He attacks the song, and has energy to burn, but I'm not convinced that he can win this. Kara says he can sing his butt off. Simon interjects that he has good chops. Paula was surprised by the song choice, but was not really impressed. Simon thought it was karaoke and clumsy. Stealing a line from Simon, Randy thought it was self indulgent. Yeah, he could get a lot of ladies with that performance at an office karaoke party, but it's not going to cut the mustard on AI. Finally, it's CRAZY CARD, Tatiana Del Toro, who gives the most ridiculous/fake/Evita-style confessional before her performance. And she's going to sing MORE Whitney Houston AGAIN - why?! She has vocal skills and can keep a tune for sure, but she's NUTS!!!! Come on, America! I think that she finally has on an outfit that is somewhat flattering for her body, but I can't get over the fact that this woman needs serious psychological help. Paula says she's confused, because even though Tat can sing, she's not a fan of people who repeat songs. Simon says she won't be able to keep up with future competitions/theme nights because she's sung the same song three times already. Tatiana's also suddenly developed an accent during this episode - most likely because she saw that the accent thing worked for Jorge. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Randy and Kara both think it's crazy that she has a different personality today, though they are glad that she's not crying hysterically tonight....yet. Alright, now we have the adorable Anoop with his mass of product-resistant eyebrows/hair! Anoop goes up-tempo with "My Prerogative", and I love it! It's a repeat from Hollywood Week, but he's killin' it on the stage now! I'm so glad that we finally get to see his full performance of this song - yaaaaaay! What a way to end the show - I hope he makes it through. Paulaa is dancing. Anoop sustains a high note towards the end - whooooooooooooooooo!!!!! I wish I could vote for him. My fingers would be FRUCKING BLEEDING!!!!!! Simon is beaming and the crowd won't shut up. Simon says Anoop was like an enthusiastic dog, and that he's likeable even though he's not the best singer. Randy says he thinks Anoop sang this song better than the first time, and calls him Anoop "Brown" Dawg. Kara says that his performance made her want to dance. Paula says he is a showman and is whippin' out some nasty moves. Now for the results of the Wild Card: JASMINE!!! NOT RICKY!!! Megan v. Tatiana...and it's...MEGAN!!!!! OBVIOUSLY. But the dancing...ughh...I don't think I can't watch it week after week.. Tatiana hijacks Megan's moment by crying at the base of the judges' table. There's only one spot left - there are a few people left (e.g. Von and Jesse), but it's obvious the competition is between Matt and Anoop!!! Ughhhh this is a hard one. IT'S ANOOP AND MATT!!!!!! Both!!!!!! Yaaaaaaaay! Best season ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait for them to hit the big stage! And I must say that I usually don't like guy singers - I like girls MUCH more overall, but the guys are on the top of my list this year! Top 13 (not 12) in order of my favorites: Anoop! Danny! Matt! Lil! Scott! Alison! Jorge! Michael! Megan! Alexis! Jasmine! Adam! Kris! Next week on American Idol the guests are Kelly Clarkson and Kanye West, so it should be pretty darn good! ;)
