American Idol This year, the 36 semi-finalists have been divided into 3 groups of 12, and only 3 singers from each group will move on. Then, we'll have the return of the "wild card" where the judges pick 3 more people to round out the Top 12. This system moves the whole thing along faster, and we don't have to watch singers who obviously don't belong there week after week. However, I still like the old format better!!! I thought that splitting it up between boys and girls was more fair - and plus, eliminating two people (instead of like, 9) allowed us to get to know the contestants before they hit the finals. Anyway, whatever...we have to live with it. The judges look great in the studio setting - much more comfortable than in conference rooms or a mansion where they don't live!!! The first contestant of the night is Jackie Tohn, and she sings "A Little Less Conversation" by Elvis. She totally brings the rock vocals, but I really don't know if this competition is for her. Plus, her outfit looks like she raided Hilda's wardrobe from ABC's "Ugly Betty". Next, Ricky Braddy sings " A Song for You". It's a nice song, and probably too much for him to handle. I just imagine him singing this to a girl's dorm room window, backed by an all-boys a capella choir carrying roses. See you later, buddy.... Now we have someone I never really cared for, though the judges looooove her: Alexis Grace. She sings "I Never Loved a Man" by Aretha Franklin. It's alright. Simon says she's the best of the night (true) and reminds him of Kelly Clarkson (huh?). I still don't get it. Brent Keith sings "Hicktown". Apparently, he was previously a finalist in the country music reality competition Nashville Star, and he has no problem sticking to that genre. I think it's boring. Kara and Simon agree. Next.... Stevie Wright sings Taylor Swift's "You Belong To Me," which is a TERRIBLE choice, in my opinion. Stevie is one of the few girls in this competition rockin a cool alto, and she picks a teenage love song?! Simon tells her she is gonna get cut. Prolly.... Anoop Desai sings "Angel of Mine" by Monica. Not the best song choice, but I FREAKING LOVE THIS GUY!!! He is de-Sanjaya-ing the East Asian track record of this competition! Plus, he sang the heck out of BOBBY BROWN during Hollywood Week. This guy is a pimp! Five stars. He's so making the Top 8 at least. Next, Casey Carlson sings "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" by The Police. Could she have picked a more boring song that is totally weird for a chick to sing?! I thought she was toast after forgetting the lyrics during Hollywood Week, but I guess they have to have at least ONE pretty girl with bikini pictures in the the semi-finals each year. Well, at least it was her and not the actual "Bikini Girl". Michael Sarver sings "I Don't Wanna Be" by Gavin DeGraw. I think this song choice sucked too! This is such a change from the more "old school" stuff that got him through the auditions. I don't know if he's trying to show that he can be cooler and younger, but I don't think this is the type of song that he'd record at all. EVER. However, I think his iron clad like-ability will pull him through. Now, if we were under the old system, he'd be able to prove himself every week. But even though Michael's good, I don't know if he's the top three of this group so far. Maybe...wild card? Next, the annoyingly adorable Ann Marie Boskovich sings "Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin. She does much better than I would have expected with that song, but I'm not sure how far she can make it in this competition. There are more talented singers around for sure, though she does have the package. I don't think this show has ever had a skinnier white girl sing Aretha Franklin before. Her American Apparel tube dress looked like a piece of blue ziti wrapped around her tiny frame. Stephen Fowler sings "Rock With You" by Michael Jackson. THIS IS THE SONG OF DEATH - WHY DID HE CHOOSE IT?! With Stephen, I still can't get it out of my head what a poor attitude he had when he forgot the lyrics during Hollywood Week. What if he flipped out like that on "the big stage"? That'd be AWK-ward. Finally, we have Tatiana "CRAZYHEAD" Del Toro, our first intergalactic contestant. This space cadet chooses "Saving All My Love For You" by Whitney Houston. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! She is mesmerizingly intense with it, but any talent she has is negated by her...um...mental instability. Why are the judges torturing us with a crazy contestant just to get higher ratings and more "buzz"? Plus, she always looks like she is dressed for a beach wedding, which is subtle-crazy. Danny Gokey sings " Hero" by Mariah Carey and it's AMAZING!!! Is there anything this guy can't sing! Him and Anoop are my favorite guys. However, he is wearing almost the same shirt that Michael Sarver had on earlier. Wake up, wardrobe!!!I think the top three will be Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace and Anoop Desai but anything can happen.
