It's the second week of the Reality Show, So You Think You Can Dance, and I am already angry with the show. We are in the tryout phase, and after talking with my niece Jessica, who tried out for the show, I realize that we are seeing what the producers want us to see and not necessarily getting the whole picture. Jessica shared with me the process of the tryouts. First the contestants dance in front of the producers who make the first cut. If they see something they like, the contestant is invited back to the next day of tryouts, where they get to dance in front of the judges. Jessica didn't make the cut, so she wasn't invited back. I'm fine with that. What has me going is the way it is presented to the viewers. Some of these dancers are brought back for a laugh, but we are given the impression that this is the first time they have danced, when in fact, they made the first cut. That may be why some of them have grown quite angry with being told they can't dance. I realize that it is good for ratings to show some of these dancers, but after making it to the second stage, they have spent the night thinking that perhaps they had a chance, only to be laughed at or ridiculed with cameras rolling.Once you understand the process, you develop some empathy for the contestants. These people have stood in line, some for hours, to try out for the show. Many have truly worked for the chance of being in the competition. I really think they are the ones who should be shown on TV. It just feels wrong to make a mockery out of some just to raise the ratings, and it leads the viewers to a false impression of the tryout stage of this competition. I would hope that in the future they would look at how they handle these auditions. To advance someone just for the hope of higher ratings is not good for the human spirit. I'm sure that some of them are doing it for the five minutes of reality fame, but others really think they had a bit of what it takes after making it to round two, only to be crushed when they find out that they returned only to be the butt of some one's joke. This week's show is the Milwaukee tryouts. Watch for Kelsey Johnson, Jessica's friend, who made it through to round two. I will be looking everywhere for a peek at Jessica, who may be in some background pans. And, remember, when you are laughing at some of those dancers, that for one night, they really thought that they might have what it takes to compete and win on So You Think You Can Dance.
