Big Brother Canada Finale
Opinions, Odds, and the Final Prediction
by MattD
But first let me begin with this, I am the publisher and on Monday I had a serious medical event. Normally I would not publish something late but MattD has been with us since the beginning and I owe him the love and respect due him so I am publishingng it late.
Well, well , the first season of Big Brother Canada is just about in the books. It was a pretty good season in my opinion, they had a couple of twists I could have done without, but overall it was a good show. Hopefully there will be lots of seasons ahead. I'll give out grades for various things, and I'll say who I would have voted for if they were giving a prize for favorite houseguest.
Production gets an A-. I thought they put together excellent shows throughout. The closest thing to a complaint is that way too many HOH's were unfinished on the night of the live show. I understand you're going to have some endurance comps where you have no choice, but it shouldn't be an every week thing . I suppose this helps the ratings a little, but the HOH should be decided live as much as possible. Outside of that, I can't think of anything to complain about.
The twists get a D. It's very very unfair to give someone a second life in this game. I don't dislike Gary or anything, but it's just not right. Don't forget Suzette also got a 2nd life, as she was saved by Canada . Also that thing where the house got to watch and listen to Topaz strategize wasn't right.
The feeds get an A+. About 20 years ago Michael Jordan opened a resturant, and at one point Charles Barkley ate there, he was asked if the food was good, and he said it was free, and food's always good when it's free. The same thing goes for the feeds. When they're free they can turn them on or off whenever they want. When the feeds were shut off they didn't blare the theme music really loud like they do in America, also they would announce when the feeds would be shut off for long periods of time, which they don't always do in America.
The cast gets a B+. Overall the cast was very good, and in fact I though the game was pretty well played. Sometimes excitement comes from bad gameplay, and we really didn't have a lot of bad moves. What keeps them from an A is there wasn't a lot of pizzaz. Liza provided a little drama, Gary sometimes as well, and Talla was Talla but overall we could have used a little more drama.
Let's review the houseguests who have been evicted before getting to those odds. The houseguests as I remember them:
Kat (15th): I always feel bad for the first one out. This wasn't as bad as Jodi last year but as far as airtime, the show started on a Wednesday night, and on Thursday she was evicted. Best wishes.
Danielle (14th): She was entertaining the short time she was there. You always wince when someone volunteers to be put on the block like she did. I liked her pretty well but even if she had survived the week, I don't think she was destined for a high finish. She probably would have been out before jury.
Aneal (13th): Wasn't a huge fan, but he was mostly the victim of a twist. This should have been Suzette's spot.
Tom (12th): He was always the center of attention. Good competitor , but his social game was a disaster.
Liza (11th): She does seem to be a bit shallow doesn't she? I wish it hadn't been a double eviction night when Tom got evicted. Would have liked to see if her relationship with Peter would have gone somewhere.
Suzette(10th): If America lets the fans vote and save someone, the fans will likely vote to save whoever is about to be evicted uinless the other person is Jeff Schroder or someone. The reason is obvious: the fans of whoever is about to be evicted will be energized to vote. It's the same thing that happens in mid-term elections, the party out of power usually picks up seats because those are the voters that are PO'd and want to do something about it. I don't think Suzette was all that popular, but it was her fans that made the effort.
AJ (9th): I really liked him. He didn't have a lot of game, but he was very pleasant with a good sense of humor. He was very knowledgeable about sports and was always talking about them. I'm glad he's got a jury vote.
Alec (8th): He added a lot to the game. I'll never understand why he did what he did with that last POV he was in.
Topaz (7th): Like Tom and Liza, Topaz and her showmance partner were evicted the same night. She'll save Gary from a 7-0 vote if he makes it.
Peter (6th): Him and Alec deserved 5th and 7th of course. Out of fifteen people, that's pretty good. They're good players who could win if they play again, but I found them both to be a little overrated.
Andrew (5th): Should have been final four. What would have happened had they not brought Gary back? He was the only one that beat Andrew in that POV. I'm about 70-75% certain we'd have had an "all East coast" final three if Gary hadn't have been brought back.
Talla(4th): Yeah I'd have voted for her if they were giving a cash prize. I wasn't rooting for her, and at no point did it look like she would win, but she was really entertaining. There's usually at least one person that finishes between 3rd and 6th because no one wants to waste an HOH, and she was that person. I'm glad she hung around as long as she did.
Odds: Ya gotta like where Emmett's sitting. Gary of course is more than capable of winning the final HOH and Emmett and Jill can always stab the other in the back.
Emmett 1-2
Jillian 3-1
Gary 20-1
Emmett 1-2: Correct me if I'm wrong but out of the final 8, I think Topaz is the only one that Emmett doesn't/didn't have an alliance with. He's playing every bit as dirty as Jillian, but I get the feeling he'll do better with the jury than will Jillian. He stabs people in the back about as politely as anyone that's ever played the game. There's something to be said for that I suppose.
Jillian 3-1: You know that what she did to Topaz was almost identical to what Dan did to Ollie in BB10? In both cases there was seven people left in the game. In both her case and Dan's the alliance they were in already had a slight advantage. In both cases it was promising something in endurance that the other person was crazy to think they'd follow through with. But like I alluded to last week, when someone like Dan plays dirty, it's "wow he's playing a great game!", when it's someone like Jillian it's "that lying b----!". I hope her and Emmett both make it. I really want to see how the jury reacts.
Gary 20-1: The good thing if Gary makes it is maybe there will be enough of a backlash if someone that's brought back makes the finals, that maybe it won't be done anymore. Gary is likeable, but again he had his shot.
Predictions: I'll say Jillian wins the final HOH, takes Emmett with her, and Emmett wins the $100K by a vote of 5-2, with AJ and Andrew dissenting.
Well that does it for this season of Big Brother Canada! I will talk about my own experience trying out for the show just not sure when. Enjoy the show and I'll see you in June!!
